Is There an Active Matter Demo? Demo and Beta History

Gaijin ran several limited free demos and closed betas, and demo progress carried into the full game. No demo is listed on the Steam store page right now.

Today’s answer: no

There is no downloadable demo right now. The Steam store page currently has no demo block and no download entry.

Before launch, though, Gaijin opened free trials several times.

Gaijin’s line on progress was that everything you earn in the demo is saved and carries into the full game after purchase. That makes it considerably more useful than a typical trial build.

What each demo actually contained

The February 2026 Next Fest build leaned into competitive content: PvP raids with anomalies, monsters and high-value loot, Nexus team battles, and shelter exploration.

It also came with hard limits — progression was capped and solo or co-op raids were not available. So if you were trying to judge the PvE side from that build, you couldn’t.

The 30 April 2026 update filled that gap. The announcement states it supported solo or up to three-player co-op raids, which makes it the more useful build for judging whether PvE suits you.

Why the demo mattered more here than usual

Active Matter is buy-to-play with no free version, which makes the demo the only zero-cost way to evaluate it. And this game has a few things you can judge in five minutes:

  • whether the head bob is tolerable for you
  • whether the footstep and gunfire direction cues feel acceptable
  • whether the AI enemies read as challenging or just irritating

All three come up repeatedly in player reports, and all three are the kind of thing you know by the time you finish the tutorial.

If you want to try it and there’s no demo

The most practical substitute is long-form gameplay, not trailers. Watch for the head bob, the audio cues and the AI behaviour — those are the three things five minutes will settle.

Then watch Gaijin’s official channels. Demos are tied to Steam Next Fest and console platform events, and the studio announces them on the official news page and in Steam announcements beforehand.

If you do decide to buy, spend the refund window carefully. The Gaijin Store allows a refund under two hours of playtime; Steam follows Steam’s own policy. That is effectively a structured trial.

Frequently asked

Is the demo the same as the “early version”?

No. The demo was a limited free slice; the early version was the paid pre-launch product on the Gaijin Store.

Is there a PS5 demo?

In a July 2026 Q&A Gaijin said a PS5 demo “will definitely be available, just later”, explaining that the earlier event was Xbox-only.

Will there be another free trial?

Gaijin hasn’t announced one. We don’t publish speculation without a source.

Does demo progress really carry over?

Yes. The official wording is that all progress earned in the demo is saved and carries into the full game after purchase. That is a studio commitment, not player guesswork.
