Active Matter Progression: Monolith, Harmonization and Merits
How the Monolith access ladder, Monolith Tokens, Harmonization Cycles and Merits work, and exactly what survives a progress reset.

The Monolith is the spine of long-term progress
You open it at the Monolith Access Terminal in your Shelter and spend Monolith Tokens to climb from Access Level Alpha to Mu. Along the way you unlock shelter upgrades, raid access passes, Replicator blueprints, Refiner recipes, shop purchase permissions, chronogenes and body sleeves.
At the top you can perform a Harmonization: wipe the current timeline’s progress back to Alpha in exchange for upgrades that persist across timelines.
Two currencies get mixed up constantly here. Credits are the main earnable currency and reset with your progress. Prime comes from daily contracts, does not reset on Harmonization, and buys Credits, Monolith access levels, extra secure containers and respawn beacons.
Which means the long-term player should be banking Prime, not a vault full of god-roll guns.
The vocabulary first
| Term | What it is |
|---|---|
| Monolith | The progression terminal in your shelter, acting as both unlock tree and quest list |
| Access Level | The ladder starting at Alpha that gates what you can buy, reach and upgrade |
| Monolith Token | The currency spent on access levels and rewards |
| Harmonization | The act of resetting a timeline in exchange for permanent gains |
| Merit | The in-Cycle activity currency, spendable on current and past rewards |
| Prime | Daily-contract currency that survives Harmonization |
| Body Sleeve | The passive loadout system that shapes your playstyle |
| Chronogene | Special ability slots, part of the Monolith reward pool |
How to spend tokens
- Open the Monolith Access Terminal and read the current level’s unlock criteria before looking at the next one.
- Run raids and contracts to accumulate Monolith Tokens.
- Spend tokens at the terminal to push the level. Note that some items are gated by an in-progress Harmonization.
- Each level also grants gear permissions, shelter facilities and recipes, so climbing the ladder is itself the main power curve.
- Once you reach Mu, decide whether to Harmonize.
Key point: Alpha is free for every player. You never pay to unlock the progression system; editions only change starting weapons, gear and currency.
What survives a reset
This is the section that decides whether long-term investment makes sense.
What resets: your access level drops back to Alpha, and the purchase permissions and facility states that came with it go with it.
What stays: Prime, which the official patch notes state does not reset on Harmonization; the permanent Mu-tier unlocks, which Gaijin designed as one purchasable per timeline and which carry across timelines; and past-Cycle rewards bought with Merits, which the developers confirmed remain obtainable after launch.
One line from the official FAQ deserves its own paragraph: if you self-wipe, edition content returns to your stash, but crystallised Active Matter (Prime) does not return. That is the clearest evidence that Prime is not an ordinary currency.
How Merits relate to Cycles
Launch opened a new Harmonization Cycle and introduced Merits. The official wording: earn Merits throughout the Cycle and exchange them for prizes, including items from previous Cycles.
That design fixes an old problem — missing a Cycle should not mean losing the content forever. For a new player it means you don’t have to worry about arriving late.
Frequently asked
Do I have to reach Mu for the game to be worth playing?
No. The Monolith is a steady stream of unlocks for gear and facilities on its own. Harmonization is just an option for people who want another lap after finishing.
Is a reset always worth it?
Depends whether you have already bought the permanent Mu items. Reset without them and you traded progress for nothing.
What are the exact Monolith Token thresholds?
A third-party wiki has published a set of numbers, but we could not verify them against a first-party source, and they shift between builds, so we do not reproduce them level by level.
Is Body Sleeve an ultimate-ability system?
No. Gaijin’s stated direction is passive choices that shape a playstyle rather than a flashy ability per character. Media reviews counted this as a plus — it avoids the “everyone has an ultimate” sameness.
